Proposed Guideline: Structural Elements - Naming Convention

Office of the Chief Information Officer, July 2006.

This document is provided for historical purposes and information only.

During July 2006, the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) developed a guideline for a naming convention for the structural elements of a web page that they hope will be taken up by developers across the Victorian State Government to provide structure and consistency when constructing web pages.

They have refined this document based on feedback received and some more research. The latest draft version of this guideline is now available for comment before it is released as version 1.

All comments are welcome and will lead to discussion in this context to further improve this concept. In addition to this, in particular the OCIO would like comments on the following two areas:

  • In 5.1 Overall Structure, should they include an all-encompassing <div> to surround the complete structure i.e. a <div> to include the <header>,<middle>, and <footer> divs? If so, how could this be used and why?
  • In 5.2 header, they have tossed around a few names for the <divs> and have decided upon <header> (as opposed to <banner>) as the 'header' concept includes more than a 'banner' (such as other nav and search, etc). Also included in this 'header' is an area for State Government branding and Departmental/Agency branding, which they have named 'header-vicgov' and 'header-local' respectively. Do you think these are good names? Do they need to have the 'header-' prefix?

As mentioned, they certainly welcome feedback on any and all of this document as it is designed to help web developers in the Victorian State Government in their work environment and to provide some additional consistency under the covers of web pages.
