The new $15 million collaborative Internet Innovation Fund (cIIF) will accelerate the use of 'next generation' ICT in Victoria by supporting government agencies, industry and community groups to innovate using Web 2.0 technologies.
'Next generation' ICT (sometimes referred to as 'Web 2.0') is centred on user- generated content and collaboration through the internet. A range of new technologies is being developed based around the platform of the internet, such as social networking sites, wikis and blogs.
Productive use of Web 2.0 technologies will be vital for Victoria to grow and develop, locally and globally.
The cIIF program will enable businesses, community organisations and government agencies to use next generation technologies to develop innovative ways of working in Victoria's environment, health, education, local government, emergency services, community and industry sectors.
cIIF will operate as a competitive grants program, supporting innovative ideas by providing seed funding and support. 'Early-adopters' will demonstrate sustainable models for the more widespread use of next generation ICT in Victoria.
There will be a call for applications to the program later in 2008. Government agencies, community organisations and industry groups will be encouraged to put forward their innovative ideas for projects using next generation ICT.
Investments such as cIIF will support the capacity of the State's information-intensive sectors to transform their practices, enabling new forms of collaboration and better access to the information, markets, skills and knowledge that will define the future performance of knowledge economies.
