Victoria Online (www.vic.gov.au) is the fastest way to find local, state and federal government information and services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Victoria Online is a "portal" - a specialised website that helps you find the information and services that exist on other government websites and can then take you directly to those websites. It is both an easy-to-use directory and a powerful search engine. You can find local, state and federal government information and services through Victoria Online (as well as organisations that were previously government-owned), all organised in a way that does not require knowledge of government or the way that government is structured. Victoria Online went live on 27 September 2003.
Since the launch, a number of improvements have been made to the site. More recently, the site underwent a complete design change as well as having new features and functionality added.
A new right-hand navigation menu was added to provide quick links to:
There is also the opportunity for visitors to "Rate this Site" via an online survey. This provides an opportunity to make suggestions about what your want on Victoria Online.
Links to the popular "Government Contacts" and "Services & Payments" sections have been promoted to the top of the left-hand navigation menu on each page.
In any one sector, for example education or aged care, many different government organisations can provide relevant information and services. Trying to work out where to find the information you seek can be time-consuming.
Victoria Online has done the work for you, classifying information into subject categories that its research shows are meaningful to people. Victoria Online understands that people can think about information in different ways, and so some subjects appear in multiple places within the site, providing multiple pathways to the information you seek.
There are two main ways of finding information on Victoria Online - either by Search, or by Browsing through a list of topics. The search facility on Victoria Online is very powerful, allowing you to search using everyday language. Or you can browse down through topics such as Transport & Vehicles, or Education, to find relevant resources on particular subjects.
Victoria Online is owned by the State Government of Victoria, Australia. It is administered by the eServices Unit, Information Victoria, within the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development in Melbourne. Victoria Online is an outcome of the Victorian Government's eGovernment strategy, Putting People at the Centre.
