Making Slideshare Accessible - Accessibility Toolkit - Version 3 - 2009

There will be people who won’t be able to access a powerpoint or open office presentation because:

  • They are blind
  • They have a text only browser
  • They are using a keyboard only

Slideshare is a presentation sharing website where users can upload, view and share presentations. Presentations can be tagged and commented. It is also possible to embed presentations into a web site or download the presentation. Presentations can be shared publicly or privately.

Slideshare uses a combination of technologies which make it inaccessible; however there is an accessible version of Slideshare that can be used instead. Slideshare can be made accessible by:

  • Providing an alternative of the presentation in HTML, text or Word; and
  • Providing a link to Easy Slideshare (accessible Slideshare)

Relationship to WCAG1 checkpoints:

Checkpoint 1.1 requires that a text equivalent is provided for every non-text element (e.g., via "alt", "longdesc", or in element content). This includes: applets and programmatic objects, sounds (played with or without user interaction), stand-alone audio files, audio tracks of video, and video.
Checkpoint 6.3 requires that pages are usable when scripts, applets, or other programmatic objects are turned off or not supported. If this is not possible, provide equivalent information on an alternative accessible page

Can Slideshare presentations be embedded in a site?

Slideshare presentations can be embedded into a web site, as the content is ignored by the keyboard and screen readers. However an alternative must always be provided, both via Easy Slideshare and an HTML, text or Word version.

Creating accessible Slideshare presentations

Provide a link to Easy Slideshare
A link should be provided to both the Slideshare presentation and a link to an accessible version of the Slideshare presentation by preceding the Slideshare URL with “http://icant.co.uk/easy-slideshare/?slides=”
Therefore a slideshare presentation with the following URL:
http://www.slideshare.net/cheilmann/purple-hack-fodder
Would have an Easy Slideshare URL of:
http://icant.co.uk/easy-slideshare/?slides=http://www.slideshare.net/cheilmann/purple-hack-fodder
Providing a transcript of the Slideshare presentation in text or HTML
It is important to provide a transcript of the presentation.

  • Include an transcript (HTML, text or Word) to all videos

Creating HTML from a PowerPoint presentation

  • Install the PowerPoint accessibility wizard .
  • Make sure all content is available in the outline view (content not visible in the outline view will not be converted to HTML)
  • Avoid graphics where possible (if you have to use graphics make sure you add a text description during the accessibility wizard)
  • Once the wizard is installed select "Save as accessible web page" from under the "File" menu to create the HTML version.

Example 1: Embedded Slideshare

Victoria Online: Quality, Reliability and Trust is an embedded Slideshare presentation. It also includes an HTML version and a link to the Easy Slideshare version.
