Maintaining an accessible site

When you are maintaining a site that conforms to the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines you need to consider the following:

  • Content author training - Training your content authors depends on the type of Content Management System (CMS) or authoring tool they are using. Some accessibility requirements may be automated and others may require manual changes.
  • Annual audits - It is important to perform annual audits of the site to ensure all areas conform to accessibility standards.

Content author training

Once your site is accessible it is important that it remains so. Training content authors in maintaining accessibility standards should be conducted by someone who:

  • Is familiar with your site;
  • Has accessibility knowledge and experience; and
  • Is experienced in training methods.

For information on what checkpoints should be covered in training see Checklist – Maintaining a site’s accessibility conformance (training)

Annual audits

The scope of your annual audit will depend on how much the site has changed since it was last audited for accessibility conformance. This is dependent on several factors:

  • How many people author the site
  • How much information has been added to the site
  • Type of information added to the site
  • Any new functionality added to the site

Performing an annual audit is similar to conducting testing of a current site, however if content authors have been trained properly the number of accessibility errors identified should be minor.

It is important that at the conclusion of an annual audit that all content authors meet to discuss recurring issues within the site and share knowledge. Issues identified in the current audit will be priority checkpoints for the following year.
