The Developers' Resource Kit is a major milestone for web and application development standards for Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) and the State Government in both its comprehensive content and the scope covered.
While firmly based on W3C Accessibility Guidelines the departmental web development requirements are expanded to include all aspects of how internet-based material must be built and presented to its audience, as well as how it is to be delivered to the department by internal and contractor providers.
The Web Development Guidelines cover all aspects of standard web page development as well as the technology areas of Flash, XML/XSLT, mobile phone/PDA, RSS, Java, JavaScript, Blogs, Podcasts and Wikis, which themselves present specific accessibility, usability and logic requirements.
The Application Development Guidelines cover a range of application standards for documentation, general coding, ASP.NET, SQL Server and SharePoint, with support for the application developer in the form of Application Blocks covering data access, security, logging, exceptions, caching and cryptography.
Links to a wide range of Developer Resources, State Government resources and external resources, along with their descriptions, also gather relevant tools and information in one place to support a quality web environment.
The Developers' Resource Kit is especially valuable for the developer and user communities within DEECD and the State Government in the way it presents supporting materials at each level. High-level guideline checkpoints are hyperlinked to further explanatory information on the requirement, along with recommendations, possible tools or methods to check for the requirement, and any examples that might prove helpful. In addition, the original source of the information is referenced and which itself hyperlinks to the underlying stipulation and rationale for the standard aimed at providing quick, targeted access to additional information on the requirement.
