eGovernment should be about people, not technology. The Victorian Government's Putting People at the Centre statement is our vision for creating a new era of richer interaction between the Government and citizens.
The Putting People at the Centre eGovernment statement is an ambitious new commitment in State Government renewal. It recognises that with new technologies come more possibilities and exciting opportunities. It is about being smarter in the way we use new networks and new technology to serve Victorians better.
Implementing a true eGovernment strategy takes much more than vision. It requires an understanding of what's possible, and coal-face experience in the use of new technologies and in delivering online services – things that Victoria has in spades.
Part of the Connecting Victoria policy, the Government Online program has provided citizens with more choice, greater flexibility and time-savings. Victoria has been praised widely for its innovative approach to online service delivery, and for the continual renewal of its ambitious agenda.
One of the reasons for our success is that we recognise that governments must constantly look to new approaches to provide greater choice to citizens, and more relevant interactions.
Our eGovernment vision harnesses advances in information and communication technologies which are supporting new services and new combinations of services. Rather than simply transferring over-thecounter services to the internet, the eGovernment vision is about integrating and packaging services from different areas of government far better than we have done to date. Moreover, it will also help to deliver benefits to taxpayers by reducing the cost of delivering services, and assisting government agencies to refine their processes and reduce duplication.
The end result will be a new level of service to citizens in all government activities, including health care, education, policing and business.
By achieving our eGovernment goals, we will also be helping to deliver on the commitments that form part of the wider Growing Victoria Together, which is the Government's 10 year plan for Victoria. The Bracks Government is determined to govern for all Victorians, and the eGovernment vision is particularly encouraging for Victorians in rural and regional areas.
One of the great advantages of network technologies is their ability to overcome physical boundaries. The Putting People at the Centre eGovernment Statement is about providing choices to those people who previously had none, and will ensure that interacting with government is a real possibility for more Victorians than ever before.
