Seeing is believing - Metadata is a powerful way of tracking the history of images and information - to the extent that the US government is using it in its documentation of the Iraq war. Mary Branscombe reports. The Guardian, October 2, 2003. "Metadata is usually seen mainly as a security risk: do you want people finding out who worked on a document and when, or what changes they made? But it's also a powerful way of tracking down information; after all, metadata such as the keywords on the page and the number of links to it are part of what Google uses to find you the web page you are searching for..."

TASI - Technical Advisory Service for Images - Delivering Digial Images

  • Metadata. "Metadata is basically data (information) about data. In the context of Digital Imaging, metadata provides information associated with an image, for example, the name of the creator, the date of creation and keywords describing the image. Users will depend on this associated information for search and retrieval as well as for evaluation and resource selection (deciding which objects to digitise)...."

Tasmanian Metadata Guidelines, v0.2 - This document provides guidelines and standards for metadata recommended for application against Tasmanian web-based resources. Metadata records should be quick and easy to create, functional and productive for retrieval purposes, and consistent across similar sectors. To create quick and easy metadata records, the use of simple Dublin Core with minimal qualifiers is recommended. Additionally, the minimum fields created should be those mandatory fields recommended by AGLS (see the Element Guidelines). Additional qualifiers and the use of other specialised schemas may also be used to build metadata records, providing they accord with these recommendations....

Third Metadata Workshop Luxembourg, 12 April 1999

On 12 April 1999, the third Metadata Workshop and Concertation Meeting, organised by the European Commission DGXIII/E2, took place in Luxembourg. 48 participants from organisations all around Europe attended the workshop as well as several European Commission services.

This workshop, which is part of an on-going concertation activity started in 1997, had four objectives:

  • to present recent developments around the Dublin Core metadata element set and look at future directions
  • to present RDF and XML and look at the practical consequences for metadata implementation
  • to look at issues related to unique identifiers for electronic resources
  • to discuss metadata issues related to long-term availability of resources.

The workshop was conducted in 4 sessions, reflecting the objectives above.

The major conclusions of the workshop can be summarised as follows:

  • For electronic documents and resources produced today, there is a pressing need for tools and systems to create and maintain metadata. Further research in this area is necessary.
  • The matter is complex, as requirements of different types have to be met, e.g. electronic commerce and long-term preservation of resources.
  • There is a need for a highest common denominator across domains and services. It is not yet clear what the specification for this is, and co-operation between many actors is necessary.
  • For projects under the Fourth Framework Programme it is necessary to pay attention to the developments.
  • For projects under the Fifth Framework Programme, the scope needs to be widened to include other domains, especially museums and archives where these issues are also important. A wide participation in the debate would increase the general applicability and interoperability of the solutions.
  • Under the Fifth Framework Programme, clustering of activities in the area of metadata systems and services is encouraged.

The following recommendations can be formulated:

  • Continuation of concertation is necessary
  • Initiatives need to take a focused, practical approach
  • The needs of the European citizen need to be taken into account
  • Performance criteria and impact of initiatives need to be measured
  • Issues around cost and quality need to be further addressed
  • Support for multilinguality needs to be enhanced
  • Further involvement of commercial parties is necessary

Web 2.0 for Designers, By Richard MacManus & Joshua Porter. Digital Web Magazine, May 4, 2005. "In Web 1.0, a small number of writers created Web pages for a large number of readers. As a result, people could get information by going directly to the source: Adobe.com for graphic design issues, Microsoft.com for Windows issues, and CNN.com for news. Over time, however, more and more people started writing content in addition to reading it. This had an interesting effect—suddenly there was too much information to keep up with! We did not have enough time for everyone who wanted our attention and visiting all sites with relevant content simply wasn’t possible. As personal publishing caught on and went mainstream, it became apparent that the Web 1.0 paradigm had to change..."

XFML

Introduction to XFML, By Peter Van Dijck. O'Reilly xml.com, January 22, 2003. "XFML is a simple XML format for exchanging metadata in the form of faceted hierarchies, sometimes called taxonomies. Its basic building blocks are topics, also called categories. XFML won't solve all your metadata needs. It's focused on interchanging faceted classification and indexing data. XFML addresses the following problems with basic hierarchical classification..."
