-
Presentation by Shannon Ryan, President of non-linear creations, and Erik Moll, Microsoft Solution Specialist, Toronto, October 5, 2010. - Do Government Agencies and Non-Profits Get ROI From Usability?
- Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox, February 12, 2007. "Summary: Although the gains don't fall into traditional profit columns, there are clear arguments for improving usability of non-commercial websites and intranets. In one example, a state agency could get an ROI of 22,000% by fixing a basic usability problem..."
- 10 Best Intranets of 2012

- Intranet Portals: Personalization Hot, Mobile Weak, Governance Essential
- Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox, July 18, 2011. Summary: 19 new case studies of enterprise portals find slow growth in new features; the focus is on robust integration and formalizing governance.
The headline for our last intranet portal study was "Enterprise Portals Are Popping." Now, 3 years later, we revisited this space with new research and our findings would best be summarized as "Enterprise Portals Are Stabilizing." Although we saw some new features, the main push was to make existing features more robust and better managed..."
- Why your intranet is not strategic
- By Gerry McGovern. New Thinking, May 9, 2011. "Most intranets are not seen as essential to the functioning of an organization. This is because management is not convinced of their strategic value.
For a long time I have waited for the intranet to get due recognition within the organization. But if most organizations I've come across are any indication then intranets are still languishing..."
- Everyone's on Facebook, Why Aren't They on the Intranet Too?
- by Michael Murray. Social Media Strategery, April 30, 2011. "... So how does understanding this information help you build a successful internal social media platform? Because to unleash the power of social media you have to understand human behavior. We are social creatures, but businesses that assume our social tendencies will ensure the success of a new collaboration platform are gravely mistaken. Why? Because they underestimate one crucial human behavior, we are social creatures AND creatures of habit. Change is hard, change is work, and getting people to change behavior requires significant effort. These platforms often fail because..."
- B.C. government turns static intranet into a community
- By Susan Oh. Ragan.com, 13 August 2010. "Lessons from the 50-day revamp start with a vision of employee engagement. They came. They saw. They posted. Within the first week of its launch in April last year, more than half of all public service employees in British Columbia flocked to their new, souped-up social intranet, @Work, logging 16,000 unique visits. By month's end, double the number of staff had entered the online fray, leaving twice as many comments than they had on the previous site..."

- What intranet content should be in PDF format?
- Written by Alex Manchester, Step Two Designs, published June 30, 2009. "The typical corporate intranet will consist of a mix of HTML-based web pages and a variety of PDF-based content available for download. PDFs can be derived from word processing documents, a document management system and/or similar software. It's not uncommon for an intranet to house thousands of PDFs alongside its standard web pages. So what's the difference between PDF and HTML, and when should each format be used?..."
- The Lean Intranet: from Intranet Zero to Intranet 2.0 and beyond (Part One: Intranet Zero)
- Written by Patrick Walsh. FUMSI, February 2009. "There is an elephant in the intranet living room. In all that has been written about intranets, very few commentators ever mention the fact that intranets don't work. In my opinion, the current paradigm for intranets has never worked. I call the current state 'Intranet Zero' because popular approaches offer virtually zero benefit to intranet users and their organizations, while giving zero chance of breaking out of the spiral of uselessness, poor user perception and even poorer usability..."

- How to manage an intranet
- By Gerry McGovern. New Thinking, December 15, 2008. "Traditional managers often lack the skills required to understand if an intranet is successful or not... The intranet is the factory of the information worker. And it's not in a very good state at the moment. No organization would allow its physical factories to be managed with the level of messiness, carelessness, confusion, waste content, and general untidiness that occurs daily on most intranets. There is a much better way; focus on time and efficiency..."

It contains numerous "firsthand views" from survey participants, in particular on their experiences with social media..."
- Implementing enterprise 2.0 in the real world
- Written by James Robertson. Column Two, November 3, 2008. "Now that the hype of enterprise 2.0 is starting to settle, it's clear that there are many valuable approaches that can (and should) be put into practice. Intranet and information managers are busy, however, pulled in many directions by different stakeholders. Resources are limited, and senior management visibility is often low. Most teams do not have the luxury of playing with technology, without some level of accountability. So what should teams be doing in the real world?.."
- West Berkshire Council implements Web 2.0 technology on intranet
- Public Technology, 22 October 2008. "This month West Berkshire Council becomes one of the first local authorities in the country to launch a new Web 2.0 style 'drag and drop' home page for its 2,500 Intranet users..."
