- Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy. "The NBN is an Australian Government initiative and represents the largest ever infrastructure project undertaken in this country. The NBN is an Australian Government initiative which will deliver high speed broadband to all Australians. The NBN is a new, wholesale only, open access high speed broadband network. The NBN will involve the laying of fibre optic cabling to at least 90 per cent of Australian homes, schools and businesses, capable of delivering speeds of 100 megabits per second, or up to 100 times faster than many people experience today. The remaining premises will be connected via a combination of next generation high speed wireless and satellite technologies delivering broadband speeds of 12 megabits per second or more..."

- National Broadband Plan: Connecting America
- Federal Communications Commission, March 2010. "The Omnibus Broadband Initiative (OBI)... In early 2009, Congress directed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to develop a National Broadband Plan to ensure every American has 'access to broadband capability'. Congress also required that this plan include a detailed strategy for achieving affordability and maximizing use of broadband to advance 'consumer welfare, civic participation, public safety and homeland security, community development, health care delivery, energy independence and efficiency, education, employee training, private sector investment, entrepreneurial activity, job creation and economic growth, and other national purposes'. Broadband networks only create value to consumers and businesses when they are used in conjunction with broadband-capable devices to deliver useful applications and content. To fulfill Congress's mandate, the plan seeks to ensure that the entire broadband ecosystem—networks, devices, content and applications - is healthy. It makes recommendations to the FCC, the Executive Branch, Congress and state and local governments..."

This week on Twisted Wire, we summarise some of the arguments you have heard over the last few years into a half-hour catch-up on the major areas of debate..."

- Sooner or later, the NBN will change your life
- by David Braue. The Age, March 30, 2012. "... But what will the NBN really do for you when it finally arrives in your neighbourhood?
Its benefits in enabling teleworking are already well appreciated by the millions of Australians that either work from home or would if their jobs allowed it.
Its role in entertainment has been dismissed by critics of the project, but the delivery of video-on-demand services over the Internet and NBN are nonetheless a multi billion-dollar industry that will expand the reach of pay TV well beyond the confines of Optus and Telstra cable networks.
Beyond those applications, however, much of the NBN's potential remains blue-sky territory. Some Australians will warm to high-quality videoconferencing if it suits their needs, whilst others will benefit from remote health services..."
