Open government: Turning past practice on its head
- by Toby Fyfe, Vol. #18 Issue #8. Canadian Government Executive, Monday, November 5, 2012. "When GTEC begins on November 5 in Ottawa, British Columbia will be on display. Kim Henderson, Deputy Minister, Labour, Citizens' Services and Open Government, spoke with editor-in-chief Toby Fyfe about B.C.'s role as this year's showcase province.
What progress has the province made toward open government?
Just over a year ago B.C. went live with Canada's first approach to open government with an open data platform. At the time we had over 2,400 data sets that citizens were able to reuse and repurpose. We also launched an open information platform where we’ve made available routine releases of information like expenses and also made available any general freedom-of-information requests that are made by applicants.
As well, we launched a brand new web presence for the province that was based on focus groups with citizens on how they want to interact with government..."

This will make access to high-speed Internet connections affordable and available to residents of remote areas of B.C. where service is not currently available.
Approximately 3 per cent of B.C.'s population lives in areas where satellite technology provides the only option for a high-speed Internet connection for the foreseeable future..."

Open data complements justice reform action plan

"Victoria – A new set of online data dashboards about criminal prosecutions went live today, providing citizens with the opportunity to better understand and analyze the B.C. justice system's operations. The data dashboards align with the B.C. government’s action plan for justice reform. Gold mines to data mines: DataBC tops 3,000 datasets
- British Columbia - Ministry of Labour, Citizens' Services and Open Government. News Release, Aug. 30, 2012. "Victoria – The B.C. government's open data website, DataBC, has released its 3,000th dataset today. This is a significant milestone, as it brings the number of datasets released to 3,041, announced Minister of Labour, Citizens’ Services and Open Government Margaret MacDiarmid.
Contributing to this milestone is data on natural resource production, including gold, going back to the 1850s. The datasets posted today will give researchers, citizens and industry a virtual time machine, allowing them to look, in some cases, all the way back to 1858. This type of natural resource data can help identify trends in production and demand across the last 150 years and is invaluable in creating accurate statistical models for future development.
The success of the DataBC website continues to define B.C. as a leader in Canada..."
