Twitter and Accessibility - Accessibility Toolkit - Version 3 - 2009

There will be people who won’t be able to access Twitter because:

  • They are blind
  • They have a text only browser
  • They are using a keyboard only

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging site where users can tell their friends ("followers") what they are currently doing in 140 characters or less.

Twitter uses a combination of technologies which make it inaccessible; however there is an accessible version of Twitter that can be used instead. Twitter can be made accessible by:

  • Providing an alternative of the content in HTML, text or Word; and
  • Providing a link to Accessible Twitter

Creating accessible Twitter

Providing a transcript of the Twitter content in text, Word or HTML

It is important to provide a transcript of the Twitter content on your site, for people who cannot use the Twitter interface or do not have a Twitter account. If time is an issue then consider sending out SMSes at the same time as you send out a tweet.

Provide a link to Accessible Twitter

A link should be provided to the Accessible Twitter interface for people who have trouble with the standard Twitter interface.

Example 1: John Brumby

John Brumby has a Twitter site. Tweets are replicated on the Premier web site .
