Victorian Government Domain Name Registration

Overview

Victorian government organisations which fall into the following categories are eligible to apply for a domain name within vic.gov.au.

• Departments
• Agencies
• Statutory authorities
• Local government entities
• Libraries
• Hospitals and health services

The Department of Finance and Deregulation (Finance) holds a sub-sponsorship agreement with .au Domain Administration (auDA), the industry self-regulatory body, for management of the gov.au domain. Finance manages the gov.au policies and administration in consultation with an inter-jurisdictional Domain Consultative Committee comprising of representative domain providers from each jurisdiction.

The Victorian Government Domain Provider, has the delegated authority to assess individual domain name applications for the vic.gov.au domain.

The Victorian Government Domain Provider may

1. reserve the right to remove a gov.au domain name from the registry if it is considered to be in breach of gov.au policies or the gov.au Registrant Agreement; and
2. reserve the right to reject an application for a domain name.

The inner budget of Victorian Government (departments and the four designated agencies - State Revenue Office, VicRoads, EPA and Victoria Police) must comply with the Victorian Government Domain Names and Allocation standard when applying for a domain name (including compliance with the gov.au policies).

All other Victorian Government organisations must comply with the gov.au policies.

The vic.gov.au domain registry

All registration services for the vic.gov.au domain are located at www.domainname.gov.au. The registration site is provided by the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO). Registrants must make all new applications for the vic.gov.au domain on this site.

Domain names are registered for a 2 year period.

Agencies will only be able to register one ".vic.gov.au" domain name per website unless there is a legitimate reason.

Cybersquatting on domain names is not appropriate. Permission must be obtained by the domain name owner prior to registration within a subdomain. Subdomains are not required to be registered and are within the control of the domain name licensee.

A detailed reason for applying for the domain name must be provided by the domain name registrant. The domain name must be used specifically and exclusively for the stated purpose.

Each department must have a central contact person for domain name registrations that the Victorian Government Domain Provider can contact when reviewing applications for registration.

It is the domain name registrant's responsibility to keep their contact information in the registry up-to-date. Contact details are used to communicate important news and issues about "gov.au" domain names and to issue renewal notices. Domain names which are not renewed will be deleted from the registry.

Applications made on this site are assessed by the Victorian Government Domain Name Provider and either accepted or rejected and the registrant is advised accordingly.
