Science and technology advances

Society as a whole is experiencing dynamic and accelerating change in science and technology, and Victoria Police is committed to staying ahead of the game.

A science and technology strategy is providing a framework defining just how, where and when Victoria Police should be investing in technology over the next five years.

Science and Technology Unit manager, Liz Stewart, said Victoria Police had a proud history of being at the forefront of technological change.

"Our early wireless patrol cars were a world first in 1923. We invented the breathalyser for road policing and played a lead role in the development of speed measuring devices," she said.

"Worldwide, our advancements in forensic sciences is well recognised, particularly our work on DNA profiling.

"Our goal is to build a confident and intelligent policing organisation by ensuring our science and technology investments are focused on building our long term capabilities."

Ms Stewart said the strategy focuses on those areas of modern policing where science and technology are absolutely critical.

"We’ve developed this strategy by tapping into the knowledge and exper­tise of our members, and by linking in with our peers in other police jurisdic­tions around the world. We also sought input from academic, research and key industry organisations," she said.

"Today’s developments in the key areas of information and communica­tion technology, forensics and policing technologies will drive our policing capabilities tomorrow and beyond.

"We will continue to stay abreast of, and invest in, innovation in science and technology across key areas of policing."

The Science and Technology Strategy was endorsed by the Victoria Police Corporate Committee in August, 2008.
