The Obama Administration has published its progress report on open government initiatives within the US federal government. The report offers a snapshot of work in progress to date, highlights of the new open government directive and a roadmap for what is coming next.
Contents include: welcoming a new era of open government, creating an open government in practice, the open government directive (hardwring accountability), open government - committed to changing how things work; as well as various appendices.
Creating an open government in practice requires transparency, participation and collaboration. Openness promotes government accountability; it also entails the sharing of government data in open and accessible formats, thereby reducing costs and eliminating waste, fraud and abuse, creating new jobs and businesses and improving the everyday lives of citizens. Public participation is encouraged by providing greater access to government information and how government does its work. The use by government of blogs and other social media tools is designed to engage a far broader audience outside of Washington. Collaboration between government and its citizens is focusing on finding innovative strategies to solve problems.
The complete Open Government progress report is available in pdf format (3213kb). (This document requires the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader). .
