Hi again,

This time I thought I would focus on a very powerful little tag that used to be looked at pretty highly before the anchor text craze - the ALT tag.

Google has recently announced that they will not OCR the image content any time soon which means that they still rely on image descriptions for their understanding of visual elements on our pages. This is particularly important for article images, diagrams and graphs and can not only improve the way web search works but also bring relevant and valuable traffic from Google image search.

I recently wrote more about SEO and ALT for those who wish to find out more and view Matt's video.

Government sites of course comply with W3C standards however the problems i not in whether the tag is used but - how!

For example instead of saying "Logo" we can have "Victoria - The Place To Be Logo". A good example is already on this site.

Thanks for sharing this useful information dejan. Google gives importance to ALT tags nowadays.

"We see ALT text as relevant as the Keyword Meta tag," said the Google engineer.

I hadn't read that one before. Where did you find that?

Thanks for volunteering this piece of gold! ;)

Since you made this statement about a year ago, I have to say that there have been some improvements with Google images. For example, now all you have to do is to hover over an image and it shows an enlarged frame of the entire image along with some description (which is page description and not image description). As technology moves ahead, it'll only become easier for Google to recognize image content. Although for now, all text for images remains within the domain of best SEO practices.

Thanks for the tip dejan, another issue is for those with screen readers, or also for those that have images turned off, having alt tags allows these people access to the site as well (not everyone uses a standard browser) Happy Smile

@chris_mac, where are you referring to in regards to enlarging images? is that in google results or are u referring to a browser option?
